Inheritance: A Legacy of Love or a Load of Worries?

Let me take you back to a conversation I had with a friend. He had just inherited his late father’s property—a sprawling bungalow, an impressive collection of antiques, and a prized car. But instead of feeling joy, he was overwhelmed.

“I don’t know where to begin,” he confessed, staring at the mountain of responsibilities.

This reminded me of an old Indian proverb: “वंश वृद्धी से धन वृद्धी होती है, पर धन वृद्धी से वंश वृद्धी नही होती” — wealth should support the family, not weigh it down.

Inheritance can feel like a blessing, but only when it’s planned thoughtfully.

Why Inheritance Feels Overwhelming

1. A House, But Not a Home

In Indian families, a home is more than bricks and walls—it’s memories, emotions, and family gatherings. But what if that home is in a different city or requires costly upkeep?

Take Yogesh, for example. He’s a Green Card holder settled in the US with no plans to return to India. He inherited his family home in Pune, but managing its maintenance, caretaker issues, and upkeep from across the globe became a constant source of stress.

💡 Think about it: Instead of leaving behind a property they may struggle to manage, consider turning it into a source of rental income or liquidating it thoughtfully while you’re still around.

2. A Business Without an Heir

Your family business may have been your life’s work, but if your children have no interest or expertise, it could become a liability. Even well-meaning relatives may struggle to sustain it without you.

I know a businessman who owns a successful pharma company in Konkan. His daughter is settled in the US and has no interest in managing the business. He’s already struggling to find a suitable buyer, and he fears that if something happens to him, his daughter will face an even tougher challenge trying to sell the business remotely.

💡 Think about it: If your children aren’t involved, consider mentoring someone trusted to take over or sell the business when conditions are favorable.

3. Burdensome Borrowings

In India, parents often take loans to build assets or fund family milestones. However, inheriting unpaid EMIs or dues can create financial stress instead of security.

I recall a family that inherited substantial personal loans and unsecured debts. The children struggled to manage these obligations, which drained their savings and led to financial instability.

💡 Think about it: Prioritize repaying debts to ensure your children inherit wealth, not worries.

4. Memories or Mess?

That beautiful brass diya set, intricate wooden swing, or vintage jewelry might hold sentimental value. But a room full of unused furniture, outdated electronics, or piles of rarely used crockery may overwhelm instead of delight.

One of my clients inherited her mother’s extensive collection of antique chinaware. With no space in her modern apartment and no market for selling it easily, she struggled to manage the clutter for years before finally donating most of it.

💡 Think about it: Talk to your children about what they’d cherish. Gift away sentimental items to ensure they are valued rather than discarded.

What Your Children Will Truly Value

1. Financial Flexibility

Inheriting investments like mutual funds, stocks, and savings accounts gives your children the freedom to use the wealth as needed—for education, emergencies, or their own financial goals. Unlike immovable assets, financial investments are liquid and easily manageable.

A friend once inherited a well-diversified mutual fund portfolio from his father. It gave him the flexibility to fund his child’s overseas education without financial stress.

💡 Think about it: Ensure all nominations are updated and key details are documented.

2. Clear Guidance for the Future

In India, families often rely on elders for wisdom. Leaving behind a well-organized will, property details, and financial records ensures your family isn’t left guessing.

One of my clients maintained a detailed ‘wealth map’—a document that listed all his assets, their values, and instructions on managing them. His family found immense comfort in this roadmap after his passing.

💡 Think about it: Discuss your plans openly to avoid confusion later.

Transforming Inheritance into a Lasting Legacy

Inheritance isn’t just about passing down valuables—it’s about passing down values. The best gift you can give your children is clarity, confidence, and control over what they inherit.

Imagine a father handing over not just wealth, but wisdom—a map of where assets are, how they can be used wisely, and what values guided those financial decisions. That’s when    inheritance becomes empowering.
