✈️ How Varadarajan Ramanathan Turned His Travel Dreams Into a Lifestyle – And How We Helped Make It Happen

Some journeys don’t start at the airport—they begin with a decision.

Today, I want to share the story of one such journey. A client and now a dear friend, Varadarajan Ramanathan, who didn’t just plan his money… he planned his life. And I feel privileged to have played a small part in helping him live his passion—travel.

✨ The Moment That Sparked It All

Back in 2011, Varadarajan attended a retirement planning session conducted by my team at his workplace. He was doing well professionally, but like many, his savings were mostly locked into traditional insurance and ULIP policies—providing neither liquidity nor growth.

After that session, something clicked.

“It struck me that if I planned better, I could travel more—not just after retirement, but even now.”

Soon after, we started working together. The ULIPs were phased out. SIPs in mutual funds began. And before the year ended, he took his first planned trip—to Kerala. That journey wasn’t just to a beautiful destination… it was the beginning of a mindset shift.

🔁 From Stability to Confidence

By the time we connected, Varadarajan had already achieved important financial milestones, like closing his home loan. The real challenge wasn’t about affordability—it was about comfort.

Like many responsible parents, his travel plans were shaped around school schedules and family priorities. The desire to explore was always there—it just needed a little clarity, confidence, and a roadmap.

That’s exactly where proper guidance helped—by turning a wish into a well-structured goal.

🗺️ “We Never Made Travel a Priority, But We Planned Around It”

He didn’t say, “I want to travel the world,” and expect magic. What he did instead was share a thoughtful wish list with me—a list of dream destinations, rough timelines, and family preferences.

From there, we started assigning a part of his investments to a long-term travel fund—something flexible, tax-efficient, and aligned with his life goals. Not once did we compromise on his retirement, son’s education, or emergency fund.

And the result?

"We've been doing one domestic and one international trip every year since 2011—except for the Covid years."

💸 How the Money Worked Behind the Scenes

This part always amazes people. Most of Varadarajan’s trips were funded from the gains of his investments—not by dipping into savings.

With proper asset allocation and timely rebalancing, we ensured liquidity when needed—without disturbing the compounding engine.

“I don’t spend much on things other than travel and gadgets. The planner in me would have been careless if I didn’t have the planner guiding me.”
(That compliment made my day.)

💖 Their Favourite Travel Memory?

Europe 2017. A 21-day group tour across London, Paris, Switzerland, Rome, and Venice. A dream brought to life by careful preparation and a passion for exploring.

Since then, the family has also explored East Europe, Canada, Australia, Kenya, and Tanzania. Travel has become a ritual, not an exception.

👨‍👩‍👦 Travel as a Family Project

Every trip is a team effort.

Varadarajan researches international destinations, his wife plans domestic travel and handles the logistics, and their son carries luggage and wins hearts wherever they go. It’s not just sightseeing—it’s bonding.

“We’ve always travelled together. Never left our son behind. That’s just who we are.”

💬 “But Isn’t Travel Expensive?”

Yes, it can be—but it’s also manageable.

They often opt for group tours, which offer convenience, cost-efficiency, and Indian food. Some companies even offer EMI options.

He shares a touching memory of meeting an elderly couple from Chitradurga on his Europe tour. They had saved from their medical shop income to fulfill their dream of visiting Europe.

“Their simplicity and dedication reminded me that it’s never too late if you plan well.”

🌏 What’s Next?

Egypt, New Zealand, Scandinavia... maybe the US.
The list is alive and growing.

And so is their portfolio—calm, structured, and ready to support the next adventure.

🧭 From My Perspective as a Planner

Working with clients like Varadarajan reminds me why I do what I do. This isn’t just about SIPs and returns—it’s about enabling people to live fully.

Too often, we put our dreams on hold. But when you put numbers behind your goals, something magical happens—they become achievable.

💬 So, Let Me Ask You:

What’s your “Europe 2017” moment?
What dream are you quietly postponing?

Let’s sit together and put a plan behind it. Because with the right guidance, the impractical becomes possible. And sometimes, it even becomes your new normal.
