IPO Craze, Trading Traps & The Lost Financial Dreams of Our Youth
In 2024, India saw 91 IPOs — a remarkable number. But here’s what’s even more remarkable (and worrying): as per SEBI, 54% of retail investors sold their IPO allotment within a week, and 43% exited on the listing day itself.
What does this tell us?
That the Indian primary market has become the new secondary market.
That investors are no longer investing — they’re chasing.
And most caught in this chase? Our youth — energetic, ambitious, digitally empowered, but financially disoriented.
π From Wealth Creation to Quick Gains
Traditionally, IPOs were seen as a way to participate in a company’s long-term growth — where patient capital met promising business models. The goal was clear: wealth creation.
But today?
IPOs are being treated like lottery tickets.
Buy on allotment. Sell on listing.
Profit? Great. No profit? Next shiny object.
This isn’t investing.
This is speculation.
π΄ Influencers Over Financial Literacy
Our youth is drowning in financial content — from Instagram reels to Telegram channels, from YouTube “gurus” to stock market WhatsApp groups.
“10X in 10 days.”
“Guaranteed trading strategies.”
“Secret IPO picks.”
In just 60 seconds, they’re promised a shortcut to riches.
And here’s what’s missing in this chaos:
-
❌ No financial goals
-
❌ No asset allocation
-
❌ No patience
-
❌ No understanding of risk
All they want is double-digit returns in double-quick time.
They hop from stocks to options, IPOs to cryptos, one influencer to another — always searching for a formula that doesn’t exist.
Because the truth is:
Investing isn’t about timing the market.
It’s about time in the market.
⚫ The Story of Pratik: A Case of Lost Direction
My cousin Pratik, a 26-year-old IT engineer, came to me recently looking worried.
He said, “I’ve tried everything – IPOs, options, even crypto. But still, nothing big to show. I followed 4 YouTubers, joined a Telegram channel, and even tried a trading course. But I feel stuck.”
When we sat down and reviewed his investments, there was no structure.
No clarity.
Only chaos.
He didn’t even know how much he had gained or lost — because he never tracked, never reviewed, just kept chasing.
He didn’t lack intelligence. He lacked direction.
π£ The Advisor Isn’t a Magician
As a financial planner, I often meet investors like Pratik. Many have already “tried” 2–3 other advisors. They say:
"I didn't get any returns..."
“He just told me to do SIP...”
“Those mutual funds are flat...”
They’re not really seeking advice.
They’re seeking magic.
But financial planning is not about magic.
It’s about math + behaviour + time.
Chasing returns without direction is like boarding every train at the station, hoping one will lead to success — without knowing your destination.
π’ The Hidden Cost: Silent Losses, Loud Activity
Like SEBI revealed in 2022, 90% of retail investors lost money in options trading. I’m confident that a similar percentage is losing money silently in IPO flipping, crypto trades, and speculative gambling — all in the name of “financial independence.”
Who’s making money?
Not the investor.
The brokers are. Every buy or sell — profitable or not — earns them a cut.
Activity is high.
Discipline is low.
Direction is missing.
π‘ What Our Youth Really Needs
Our youth doesn’t need more “tips.”
They need financial direction.
They need to:
✅ Set real, measurable financial goals
✅ Build discipline with SIPs and asset allocation
✅ Stick to a long-term plan
✅ Review, not react
✅ Learn before they earn
✅ Choose an advisor — and stay with one who understands them, not just the market
π΅ Final Thought: Not Every Wave Is Meant to Be Ridden
We are not America.
Our economy, financial maturity, and investor education are different.
But many platforms, influencers, and even advisors are pushing complex financial products — in a country where most investors haven’t even built an emergency fund.
If young investors like Pratik don’t pause and reset, they will eventually be wiped out by the very waves they thought they were surfing.
Because wealth isn’t built in days.
It’s built in decades.
